Auriol tips Solberg for the title

30-Oct-2003

Didier Auriol, the 1994 World Rally Champion, reckons that Norway's Petter Solberg is the favourite for the 2003 crown rather than his fellow Frenchman Sebastien Loeb.

The Subaru driver is one point behind Citroen driver Loeb with only the Wales Rally of Great Britain to run.

"At the moment, I think it'll be Solberg," Auriol predicted. "Sebastien was very impressive in Australia, beating team-mates Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae on a rally he didn't know well. He's got nothing to lose. He can still hope for the title, but Solberg is driving very well, he's very quick, his car and tyres are well adapted to the terrain and he won last year. On paper, he's the favourite."

Auriol is hoping for better things from his Skoda, on the basis that the rally is usually slippery and the Czech car is closer to the pace in bad conditions.
