This was the first time we had actually attended
a rally and overall we did have a really good day. The weather couldn't have
been better and when the sun came out we actually felt quite warm ! We went
on the Friday (we had day passes) and got to Trawscoed at about 7am. We had
to walk about half a mile from where we parked but once we got to the spectating
areas, it was really empty so we got good viewing points. I was quite surprised
because we were expecting it to be like the F1 Grand Prix where you have to
get to Silverstone at 5am in order to get a decent view in the spot you want.
Anyway, we watched all the action from stage 3 and then walked around a bit
before settling down for stage 5. We were a bit worried when we heard that stage
4 at Brechfa had been cancelled but stage 5 started more or less on time. We
saw some spectators taking rather silly risks by dashing across the road in
between cars coming through, and the marshals weren't really doing anything
about it, apart from blowing their whistles harder! Oooooh.
We watched stage 5 almost right to the end and set off for stage 6 at Rheola
at about 2.30pm. However, by the time we got back to our car and drove down
the motorway, it was way gone 4pm and the stage was due to start at 3.28pm,
so instead of turning off the motorway we carried straight on back to our hotel.
This was a bit of a disappointment as we had been looking forward to Rheola
and, after all, we'd paid good money to watch it.
Apart from this, we really enjoyed the day but I doubt that we'll drive all
the way from South London again to spectate. What with two nights in a hotel,
a whole tank of petrol, £4.40 (yes, £4.40) to get over the Severn
Bridge and day tickets at £30 a hit, it can work out to be quite pricey.
I think we'd much rather stay at home where it's warm and dry and enjoy every
stage without quite so much rushing around.
